Are you a UK resident wondering if you need to apply for a visa before flying to Dubai? You don’t need to apply for a visa in advance. The citizens of the UK are qualified to enter Dubai using a visa on arrival, which is free and is valid for a maximum of 30 days. But, as easy as it seems to be stated, there are still essential rules and requirements one must be aware of before filling up his or her suitcases.
I am Ali Al-Mansoor, and I have personally experienced the Dubai visit based on this visa-on-arrival system. There was no filling of forms or paying any fee before I boarded my flight. At the airport, the whole thing was efficient, quick, and without tension. I have made this guide to make you familiar with the actual process so that next time, when you are passing through immigration.
In this blog, I’ll explain everything you need to know: what the visa on arrival is, who can use it, how to enter the airport of the UAE, what documents to bring to the country, how a visitor can extend the stay, what questions are frequently asked by the UK citizens before starting to fly to the UAE.
What Is a Visa on Arrival?
Visa on arrival (VOA) is a type of entry permit that is given to eligible visitors after arrival at their destination (Dubai in this case). Being a holder of the British passport, you automatically come under the list of countries that have the ability to get their visa on arrival when they land at the airport, and will be allowed to enter the country without having to have applied prior to this privilege.
Key Features
30-Day Stay
Up to 30 days, it is possible to stay in Dubai without an advance application.
Free of Charge
There are no payment fees or costs; nothing is charged by the British people.
One-Time Extension
You may adjust your stay for another 30 days, bringing it up to 60 days.
Who Is Eligible for the Visa on Arrival?
Meeting the following conditions is enough to make you qualify:
British Citizen Passport Holder
You should have a valid British Citizen passport (not British Overseas Territories, British Subject, or other varieties) with you. You need to have a valid passport (at least 6 months after the date of arrival in the UAE).
Purpose of Travel: Tourism, Business, or Short Visits
The visa suits perfectly well:
- People are visiting Dubai to have fun at its attractions
- Business travelers attending meetings or events
- Friends or relatives who come to visit a UAE resident.
In case you are going to work or stay in a long-term manner, you will require another type of visa.

What to do when you arrive at the airport?
1. Arrive at Dubai International Airport
As soon as you reach the airport, step in the direction of immigration.
2. Go to the Immigration Counter
No pre-approval is required, and no check-in online is required. You can simply walk to the counter using your assembled UK passport.
3. Present Your Passport
Give the officer your valid British passport. No additional papers needed.
4. Visa Stamp Issued Instantly
The officer will also do a 30-day visa on arrival stamp into your passport without cost or time wasted in queues. It did not take me more than a minute.
5. Collect Bags and Exit
After being stamped, take your luggage and walk out. This is as good as it gets; you are officially in Dubai, with no tension or delays.
Documents You Need as a UK Citizen
Be sure you have the following ready:
- A valid British passport
- A return ticket
- Proof of accommodation
- Travel insurance
- Enough Funds
I was not requested to provide return flight tickets and hotel reservations, but this is always safer in case of a request by the officer.
Can You Extend Your Visa on Arrival?
Yes, you have the privilege to extend your 30-day stay by another 30 days by visiting a local immigration office or an authorized typing center in Dubai.
Key Points
- You are required to apply before your existing 30-day visa expires
- The cost of the extension is about 600 AED
- Overstaying results in a daily fine (about AED 50 per day)
In case you are going to spend more than 60 days, think of leaving and re-entering the country, which will reset the visa on arrival.
Can You Work on This Visa?
No. This visa is only meant to be a tourism or a short visit. You will need a legitimate United Arab Emirates work visa or residency permits in case you intend to work, freelancing, or venture into business.
It is a violation of the law to work without the correct visa, since this offense will result in a fine or even deportation.
What If You’re Traveling With Family?
Every child, as well as an adult in your family, should possess a passport. They will equally be issued with a visa on arrival as long as they are holders of UK passports.
If you’re traveling with non-UK citizens, check their visa requirements separately.
Can You Visit Other Emirates with the Dubai Visa?
Absolutely. When you are in Dubai, you are at liberty to move to the other Emirates, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah, among others.
The visa on arrival is for the whole UAE, not for Dubai.
